Ban on Chinese Apps in India

Ban on Chinese Apps in India

Amid the tensions between China and India which has been on the rise, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology permanently banned several applications like Shein, Wechat, TikTok and 221 other Chinese apps due to the issues surrounding privacy and data protection. This decision was based on reports from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre which the Government received.

Its pertinent to understand that the move comes after several complaints of stealing and unauthorized transmission of user data to servers outside India while using these applications. While others also relate this move with the standoff along the line of Actual Control in Ladakh with Indian Soldiers.

Yet, it doesn’t end there. With the ban, though there are innumerable positive benefits like India coming with its own apps like Chingari, an app similar to Tik Tok made by Indian developers which saw a huge increase in its download in just a week motivating several Indian Developers i.e., giving a further push to Make in India Initiative, the notion of safeguarding our sovereignty and integrity of the nation by protecting private data of citizens from getting leaked and going into wrong hands, also big setback for China as India was the biggest market for it suffering huge loss besides also the destruction of the dream of China to become biggest digital super power.

The negative side of it shows another picture altogether. As banning these apps has also caused many Indians’ losing their jobs and their primary source of income, large number of investors in India being Chinese, we may lose them too since a negative image has been created and they may think twice before investing in India as future relations between India and China is at stake.  Apps like Cam scanner, PubG, Tik Tok was amongst the most popular apps being used in India but due to the ban, several people protested and posted in social media about their losses and it had created a huge scene.

But let us also not forget about several other Chinese apps like Zoom which is being used by almost everyone these days owing to the pandemic. Several classes being held online; most of the schools and colleges are dependent on zoom and also other utilities which are out there in the market and people continue to buy and use it.

But in conclusion, it is right to say that this move by the Government is totally commendable. Citizen’s data needs to be protected and secured. We certainly can’t allow the misuse of apps and stealing private and personal data which puts millions of citizen’s data at risk. T
