Introduction : Social Media

Social media is basically websites and applications that enable users to create content or to participate in social networking.

It’s a platform that allows users to have conversations, share information and create web content.

Some popular examples of general social media platforms include Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat and many more.

There are many positive aspects of social media like exposure to global networking but there is also a darker side to it like social media may cause depression, anxiety and can lower self-esteem of individuals and it also loots the greatest treasure known as time.


Social Media Laws : 

Social media laws constitutes both civil and criminal aspects.

These laws covers legal issues related to user generated content and the online sites that transfers and spreads that content.

Legal concerns raised by social media platforms includes privacy, for example when data’s such as  pictures, audios, videos are posted and misused online without the consent of the owner.

This also covers defamation related issues that can raise conflicts between high profile personality and the audience.

Although, social media laws are evolving and changing, there are some acts defined such as : Information Technology Act, Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) , Communications Decency Act (CDA) , Digital Millennium Copyright Act.


Need of Social Media Laws: 

Social media laws are important because it allows users to control and regulate all the legal issues related to social media.

Section 66A of the Information Technology Act, clearly restricts the transmission, posting of messages, mails, comments, which could be offensive or unwarranted.

Also, text, image, audio, video or any other electronic record which is offending and capable of being transmitted.


Implications Of Social Media Laws : 

Information Technology Act regulates social media laws which were enacted in the year 2000, basically to regulate, control and deal with the issues arising out of the Information Technology.

Also, social media can provide an invaluable source of information for investigators. 

Criminals may use social media to share information about there whereabouts and those of there associate’s. They can also share data and figures of their criminal acts.

Thus, social media networking sites in India are liable for various acts and omissions that may be punishable under the laws of India.


Conclusion :

It can be concluded that Social Media Laws are providing absolute privacy security to the users to solve and deal with complicated problems. 

It also has potential to penalize the wrongdoers basically for the infringement of an online rule or regulate.

Social Media Laws also provide excel understanding of knowledge related to legal issues.
